The Norwegian Sky isn’t the first name that comes to mind when you think about Norwegian Cruise Line. Yeah, you’re probably imagining giant waterparks, go-kart tracks, and some crazy Broadway-style shows, right?
Norwegian Sky comes from a time when cruising was mostly about relaxing, enjoying a drink, and getting a tan in the sun. This is a ship from 1999 that received a major refurbishment in 2024 to feel fresh and updated, with some smart improvements along the way. If you’re all about an intimate, calm Norwegian cruise experience, let’s just say that the Sky is the limit.
What we like about Norwegian Sky
Norwegian Sky isn’t for those looking for high-speed thrills on go-karts or huge waterslides that drop thirteen floors. This is the second-ever Norwegian Cruise Line ship, arriving just one year after their first ship, Norwegian Spirit, which launched in 1998. Much like Spirit, Norwegian Sky is all about a chill and peaceful atmosphere. Unlike Spirit, however, it does have a kids’ club for children aged 3–17, as well as an arcade, making it a better option for families.
Add to this the fact that the ship is small, accommodating slightly fewer than 2,000 guests, and it becomes a perfect choice for traveling with little ones while still enjoying a quiet, peaceful experience with your partner.
One of the best perks of this ship is the attentive staff. Everywhere you look online, people say that the crew ranks among the best Norwegian has to offer. The crew-to-guest ratio isn’t as high as on the newest vessels, but it’s clear that the staff on Sky are experienced and always ready to help wherever they can. They even remember your food allergies in the main dining room and make any necessary adjustments to the menu. Extra props go to the cabin attendants, who are amazing, do a fantastic job keeping your room clean, and are always ready to bring you anything you need.
The Sky was originally launched in 1999, but a recent update in 2024 did wonders. The rooms are still on the smaller side, but they now feel brighter and feature a more modern décor. The best news is the addition of Cagney’s Steakhouse, one of Norwegian’s iconic restaurants, now available on Norwegian Sky. Cagney’s is often considered the best restaurant onboard, but there are also plenty of bars, like Sugarcane Mojito Bar, offering unique cocktails that are definitely worth trying.
What we don’t like about Norwegian Sky
Norwegian Sky is more than 25 years old, and it shows in certain ways. It doesn’t offer as many entertainment options or big shows as the newer ships - and that’s fine, and pretty much expected. Some venues, however, do feel a bit small, and activities for kids are hit or miss. Sure, there’s a Kids Club and an arcade, but no waterpark or even a single waterslide.
The main drawback is definitely the room size. Inside staterooms start at just 119 square feet, while the industry standard these days is closer to 150-175 square feet for entry-level cabins. They can feel pretty claustrophobic. Balcony cabins start at 193 square feet. Not amazing, I agree, but still a big step up compared to the inside rooms. So yeah, keep those sizes in mind if you’re planning to travel on Norwegian Sky with your family.
