Norwegian Dawn is the sister ship of Norwegian Star and just one year younger, having launched in 2002. It’s a mid-size ship designed for travelers who aren’t looking for wild entertainment or mind-blowing activities like go-kart tracks or over-the-top waterslides found on Norwegian’s newest vessels.
Instead, this ship appeals to those who prefer a quieter atmosphere and want to save some money while cruising through the Caribbean and visiting the private island of Great Stirrup Cay. So, yes, not exactly the Dawn of a new era, but I won’t complain when we can pay less than $400 for a fun family cruise.
What we like about Norwegian Dawn
If you’ve read our review of Norwegian Star before, you’ll know right away that Norwegian Dawn is almost the same. And I mean really similar. One of the most common questions I get is, “Hey, what’s the difference between them?” Honestly, it sometimes feels like trying to tell the difference between sweet potatoes and yams.
Both ships are considered mid-size, and both are quieter and easier to get around than Norwegian’s newer Prima and Breakaway-Plus Class vessels. You won’t find waterparks or even waterslides onboard - which might be a bummer for some - but it does help keep the overall atmosphere calmer. It also means that most families with kids tend to pick other ships for their Caribbean vacations. So, if you’re traveling solo, with a few friends, or want a cozier trip with your partner without spending a fortune, Norwegian Dawn is definitely a solid choice.
Norwegian Dawn also brings a wave of nostalgia from the early 2000s era of cruising. Sure, you won’t find skydiving simulators or bumper cars onboard, but you will find a library, a jogging track, a sports court, an arcade, and a main swimming pool - all staples of cruising back in the day. It even has the Havana Club, a Cuban-inspired bar where smoking is allowed… and maybe where you’ll make a few new friends too!
In 2024, Norwegian Dawn went through a refurbishment and picked up some nice upgrades along the way. The biggest highlight is the addition of Los Lobos, a Mexican specialty restaurant that’s usually reserved for Norwegian’s newer ships. Los Lobos is often considered one of the best dining venues onboard, but you’ll also have plenty of other great options like Moderno (a Brazilian steakhouse), Cagney’s Steakhouse, Le Bistro (French cuisine), and La Cucina (Italian favorites). When it comes to dining, Norwegian Dawn gives you plenty of choices.
What we don’t like about Norwegian Dawn
Norwegian Dawn is almost 25 years old, so it’s no surprise that its design and layout don’t feel particularly modern. It’s a ship that works fine for kids, but there are definitely better family-friendly options out there. Remember, there’s no waterpark or waterslide onboard, and that’s a bit of a letdown for a ship that sails to the Caribbean.
The Dawn does have several whirlpools, but only one main pool plus a smaller children’s pool. Unlike its sister ship, Norwegian Star, it also doesn’t feature the Spice H2O bar. The downside of not having Spice H2O is that you miss out on one of Norwegian’s best adults-only venues, and it also makes the main pool area feel more crowded since there isn’t enough space for guests to spread out.
Conclusion
Norwegian Dawn is a great pick for travelers who don’t want to spend a lot and can snag solid deals on Caribbean cruises or longer transatlantic journeys. There’s plenty of dining options, and the quieter vibe is perfect for families traveling without kids. Personally, I’d say Dawn is a little better than the Star, but I’d still compare prices and itineraries between the two before booking my next vacation.
