Did you know that Zuider means South in Dutch? Cool, huh?
Zuiderdam is a classic when it comes to Holland America. It’s actually the third vessel the brand launched back in 2002 and has become a staple in the fleet, cruising through Europe, the Caribbean, and the Panama Canal. These days, it’s a ship that offers very competitive fares for a premium cruise, with top-tier dining, great live music, and an overall vibe that’s perfect for those who want to relax while crossing the Atlantic.

Let’s start with something pretty cool: Zuiderdam focuses heavily on what we call World and Grand Voyages. We’re talking about long cruises - over 21 days in fact - that visit multiple countries and destinations. They’ve got everything from a 32-day Ultimate Caribbean cruise departing from Miami, where you basically visit every island out there, to an epic 35-day world voyage leaving from Boston that explores Norway and even catches a solar eclipse. These longer cruises also include some fun Panama Canal sailings that venture into beautiful Mexico.
The itineraries are unique, but what about the ship itself? Zuiderdam is one of the smallest ships in the fleet, carrying just under 2,000 passengers. It’s a cozy, intimate setting that’s perfect for those looking to relax on one of the longer world cruises. There’s a strong focus on music, with venues like the Rolling Stone Lounge, Billboard Onboard, and the World Stage playing everything from ‘70s classics to the occasional classical performance. If you’re a fan of kicking back with a drink and enjoying great live music, you’ll feel right at home here.
I’d say the unique itineraries and food are the best things about Zuiderdam, for sure. But it’s also worth noting that, even though the ship dates back to 2002, it received a major update in 2017 that added new dining venues and entertainment options. It may not match what you’ll find on newer ships like Rotterdam, but it still has some great perks, like a full wraparound deck that’s perfect for walking and taking in the views. You’ll definitely appreciate that when sailing through the Panama Canal or cruising along the coast of Norway.

Zuiderdam is an older ship in the Vista Class, so it doesn’t have all the amenities you’ll find on the newer Pinnacle Class ships. There’s no B.B. King’s Blues Club, which is often considered the best music venue on modern Holland America ships.
You also won’t find specialty spots like Tamarind or convenient options like the Grand Dutch Café, perfect for grabbing a quick beer, coffee, or snack. In fact, there are times when neither the buffet nor the main dining room is open… sometimes for up to two hours. And while room service is free and available 24/7, it can take more than an hour to get your food during those gaps.
Want to cross the world or spend a lot of days at sea? Then MS Zuiderdam might be a great option for you. Sure, the ship feels dated in some areas, especially when it comes to missing some of the restaurants and lounges found on newer Holland America ships, but you still get top-notch staff, good food, and a cozy, intimate atmosphere.
